The son of Grand Duke Paul Petrovich, later Paul I, Alexander succeeded for the throne just after his father was murdered. He dominated Russia during the chaotic duration of the Napoleonic Wars. As prince and during the early years of his reign, Alexander generally employed liberal rhetoric, but continued Russia's absolutist procedures in practice.
